Redesigned 2016 Mazda Miata Returns Roadster to its Roots, Redefines Zoom-Zoom
By Jeff Youngs, September 08, 2014
Mazda is set to simultaneously reveal the redesigned 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata in Tokyo, Barcelona, and California, using YouTube to live-stream the California event, which will feature 1980s pop band Duran Duran. The event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. PDT on September 3, 2014. The unveiling of the new MX-5 can be viewed live on YouTube by clicking http://bit.ly/2016_MX5.
For now, few details are known about the new 2016 Miata. The iconic roadster is expected to reflect Mazda's current "Kodo" design language and will be constructed upon a new front mid-ship engine, rear-drive platform incorporating Skyactiv powertrain and weight-reduction technologies designed to improve performance and fuel efficiency.
Mazda says the fourth-generation Miata will feature its most compact configuration yet, and will benefit from a lower center of gravity and an engine located nearer to the center of the car. Weight loss is pegged at approximately 250 lbs., but Mazda says the new Miata will be more rigid and safer than the outgoing model. Fiat also plans to sell a version of the new MX-5 Miata.
We'll have complete information about the all-new MX-5 Miata on Autos.JDPower.com in the days ahead, including a new car preview with exterior, interior, options, engine, transmission, fuel economy, safety, and technology details.
