Redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester Debuts New Turbo Engine

By Jeff Youngs, November 01, 2012
In advance of its official unveiling at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of November, the 2014 Subaru Forester breaks cover with this photo and details about its new optional turbocharged engine.

According to Subaru, the 5-passenger 2014 Forester is "all-new" and the crossover SUV's interior is roomier, while the exterior remains the same size. Rear-seat leg room and cargo space have expanded from the previous-generation model, and Subaru says the 2014 Forester will be offered with smartphone integration, navigation system, reversing camera, and premium Harman/Kardon audio system.

Two engines will be offered with the 2014 Forester. The standard Forester model will be fitted with the same 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter boxer-type 4-cylinder engine installed in the current model. However, fuel-economy ratings will improve due to pairing the engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a new continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The upgraded engine will be a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged boxer-type 4-cylinder, capable of generating 250 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,000 and 4,800 rpm when operated on premium gas. A "high-torque" CVT will be standard with the turbocharged engine, and Subaru says it will offer manual shifting modes calibrated to mimic a 6-speed or an 8-speed transmission. Hill-descent control will be standard on the 2014 Forester Turbo.

The new Forester retains its 8.7-inch ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive, but is equipped with a revised suspension that offers "agile handling and a highly compliant ride quality," according to Subaru. The base model is equipped with 17-inch aluminum wheels, while the Forester Turbo upgrades to a set of 18-inch aluminum wheels.

More details regarding the redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester will be available closer to its debut at the 2012 LA Auto Show.
