Ram Adds More Powerful Hemi and Better Suspension to its 2014 Ram HD Lineup

By Jeff Youngs, July 01, 2013
The Ram truck brand will introduce what it says will be the largest displacement V-8 engine in the heavy-duty truck segment in its 2014 Ram 2500 HD. The new pickup, which has a starting MSRP of $30,695, including destination charge, can be equipped with an optional all-new, 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 that offers more power and torque than the current Ram 5.7-liter Hemi engine and adds $1,495 to the sticker price.

The new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 produces 410 horsepower at 5,600 rpm with 429 lb.-ft. of torque and features variable valve timing (VVT) with fuel-saver cylinder deactivation. The new 2014 Ram HD comes with a standard 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 that delivers 383 horsepower at 5,600 rpm with 400 lb.-ft. of torque and also has VVT for better efficiency and performance.

In addition, parent firm Fiat-Chrysler said it will offer diesel powertrains that are mated with either a manual or automatic transmission in the 2014 truck to better meet customer needs. The optional powertrains include a 6.7-liter Cummins high-output turbo diesel that produces 385 horsepower.

For a more comfortable ride, Ram will also offer an all-new 5-link coil rear suspension on the 2500 HD that is similar to the suspension already available on the 1500. Also available on the new truck: factory rear air suspension and a supplemental air suspension system for the Ram 3500. The system uses an air bag to replace the coil spring, which is similar to what is found on the Ram 1500.

The Ram 3500 will continue to feature a rear leaf spring system, but will also offer a supplemental air suspension system, which can help level the truck to improve stability and ride even when pulling a 30,000-lb. load.

Ram says other new features in its 2014 Ram Heavy Duty lineup include dual alternator systems up to 440 amps; new 18- and 20-inch wheel packages; and a 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty along with a 15,000-mile oil change interval for the Cummins diesel engine.

In addition, Ram's HD line features a cargo-view camera that provides a view of the bed for easier hitching of fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers, as well as monitoring loads. Also, a flat load-floor option is now available on Crew Cab models, which includes fold-out panels that create a flat surface across the floor of the rear seating area.

For 2014, the Ram Heavy Duty offers 12 different colors, including two new shades: Blue Streak and Granite Crystal, available in a monotone and/or two-tone depending on the model.

Through the first 5 months of 2013, the Ram division of Fiat-Chrysler has delivered 53,456 HD large pickups, which is up from 43,559 unit sales in the same period a year ago. In 2012, Ram sold nearly 111,500 HD trucks, according to J.D. Power research.
