New Volkswagen Telematics System Is Called Car-Net

By Jeff Youngs, August 03, 2013
Volkswagens disproportionately appeal to younger people, a demographic that demands high-tech features in its vehicles, so it should come as no surprise that for the 2014 model year, the automaker is rolling out a new telematics system that it calls Car-Net. Similar in function to telematics technology offered by other automakers, Car-Net will cost $17.99 per month or $199 per year. Buy several years of service in advance, and VW offers a Car-Net services discount.

A key feature of VW Car-Net is its automatic crash notification service. If the car is involved in a collision and the air bags deploy, the automatic crash notification service springs into action, transmitting information about the car and its current location to the Car-Net Response Center and putting a Car-Net Customer Specialist in touch with the Volkswagen's occupants. The Customer Specialist can then connect occupants in the car to local authorities in order to speed assistance or rescue.

In addition to this safety feature, Car-Net provides location-based roadside assistance, stolen-vehicle assistance, the ability to schedule service appointments, and, if the car is equipped with a navigation system, the ability to send a destination to the system for route planning.

A VW Car-Net mobile application is available through the Apple iTunes App Store. Using the app, a Volkswagen owner with an active subscription to Car-Net can remotely lock or unlock the vehicle's doors, check the status of locks and lights, and even find the car using the Last Parked Location function.

Car-Net will not be available on every Volkswagen model. Initially, only certain versions of the Beetle, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat, and Tiguan will be offered with the technology.
