New Lexus Compact Crossover SUV Concept Debuts in Frankfurt

By Jeff Youngs,
Take a look at the Lexus SUV lineup and it is evident that the company could use another crossover or two. The Lexus LF-NX Crossover Concept debuting at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show would suggest that the automaker is planning to bring a new compact crossover SUV to market, one long rumored to be in development. Few details were given in advance of the LF-NX Crossover Concept's official unveiling, but here is what Lexus says about its new compact crossover SUV concept vehicle.

Exterior styling incorporates elements of the automaker's current L-finesse design language, including what the company describes as a "strong interpretation" of the new Lexus spindle grille design and independent L-shaped daytime running lights similar to those found on the 2014 Lexus IS. Black protective trim is applied to the LF-NX Concept's lower body and fender edges, and the concept version of the SUV is equipped with oversized fender blisters, front scoops, and a rear diffuser panel. Brushed Silver Metallic paint is designed to give the Lexus LF-NX the appearance of having been created from a single piece of metal.

Inside, the LF-NX Concept continues the modern Lexus "human-oriented" interior design approach, which puts displays in an upper display zone and controls in a lower operation zone. The LF-NX is equipped with touch-sensitive electrostatic switchgear, similar to the climate system in the latest IS sedan, as well as a new touch-pad version of the company's Remote Touch Interface. For the concept SUV, carved metal trim and a black-and-yellow leather interior contrast with blue instrument lighting.

Lexus does not divulge powertrain details, except to say that the LF-NX Concept is equipped with a new Hybrid Drive System "tuned for SUV performance." Given that Lexus has trademarked the names NX 200t and NX 300h, and that industry spy photographers have captured a new small Lexus SUV running around Germany's Nurburgring, it would appear that the company is planning more than just a hybrid variant of its new compact crossover SUV.

Additional details could be available after the SUV's official unveiling next week at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
