A New Infiniti "Q" is Headed to a Dealership Near You

By Jeff Youngs, December 17, 2012
Infiniti has announced that starting with the 2014 model year, it is changing the way it names its models. Rather than continue with the current alphanumeric soup of nameplates, the brand is aligning all of its sedans, coupes and convertibles under the "Q" badge and all of its crossovers and SUVs under the "QX" designation. Following the "Q" or the "QX" will be a number reflecting the model's position within the series hierarchy rather than its engine displacement.

The sedan, coupe and convertible lineup will include the 2014 Infiniti Q50 (formerly the G37 Sedan), 2014 Infiniti Q60 Coupe (formerly the G37 Coupe), 2014 Infiniti Q60 Convertible (formerly the G37 Convertible), and the 2014 Infiniti Q70 (formerly the Infiniti M lineup).

On the crossover and SUV side of the house, the new models will be the QX50 (formerly the EX37), QX60 (formerly the JX35), QX70 (formerly the FX lineup), and the QX80 (formerly the QX56).

The company says that after consulting its dealers, customers and business partners, it determined that it needed to simplify and standardize its naming conventions in advance of a product expansion in the years to come.

In deciding to base the new nomenclature on the letter Q, Johan de Nysschen, president of Infiniti Motor Company Limited, said: "After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that 'Q' captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasizing our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45--Infiniti's first iconic flagship product in 1989."

The first model to employ the new naming strategy is the 2014 Infiniti Q50, a luxury sport sedan set to replace the G37 Sedan. Infiniti will introduce the new 2014 Q50 at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.
