New 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray "Changes Corvettes Forever"

New 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray "Changes Corvettes Forever"

By Jeff Youngs,
Three high-ranking executives with General Motors stood on a stage at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, each one genuinely moved by the task at hand. They spoke to a large gathering of journalists, analysts and fans of "America's sports car" following the official introduction of the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, a car signaling that "Corvettes have changed forever," according to its chief engineer, Tadge Juechter.

Marking the debut of the seventh-generation Corvette, the new C7 is lighter, lower, wider, more rigid, and more fuel-efficient than the model it replaces, gaining performance ground in every measure.

Styling is purposeful, adhering to a "form-follows-function" approach, while giving the Corvette a more international appearance. Chevrolet says it translates what it has learned from its Corvette Racing initiative to the new Corvette Stingray, such as the standard functional air vent atop the hood that helps to eliminate aerodynamic lift at high speeds, thus helping to retain sharp steering response.

To remove mass and keep the new 2014 Corvette's center of gravity low, the car comes with a standard carbon fiber hood and removable roof panel. This, in addition to an aluminum frame and greater use of lightweight materials in the vehicle's construction, drops 99 pounds from the C7 and results in a perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution.

A new 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 engine is standard, and Chevrolet says that while specifications are not final, the automaker is targeting 450 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter figure peaking lower in the rev range and matching the output of the former 7.0-liter V-8 in the Corvette Z06 between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm. Chevrolet expects the new Corvette Stingray to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds.

The engine is equipped with Active Fuel Management technology, which is designed to shut down half of the cylinders at appropriate times to help improve fuel economy. Chevrolet expects the new Corvette to get more than 26 mpg on the highway.

A new 7-speed manual gearbox is standard, and includes Active Rev Matching technology that can, according to one Chevrolet spokesperson, "make a novice drive like a pro." A 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is optional.

Electric steering and Brembo braking components are standard, and the Corvette Stingray can be equipped with a next-generation Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension on models equipped with the optional Z51 Handling package. The standard wheel and tire setup offers 18-inch front wheels combined with 19-inch rear wheels and performance run-flat tires, and Chevrolet says the C7 can round a curve generating more than
1g of lateral grip.

A new Driver Mode Selector system tailors the model's dynamic attributes according to 5 different settings: Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport, and Track. The optional Z51 Handling package adds a number of hardware upgrades designed to improve performance, including an electronic limited-slip differential, slotted brake rotors and brake-cooling ducts, larger forged aluminum wheels with lower-profile tires, and aerodynamic enhancements to improve high-speed stability.

Chevrolet has also worked on the Corvette Stingray's interior. For 2014, the car can be upgraded with a competition sport seat with racing harness pass-throughs, premium leather, extended leather treatment, genuine carbon fiber or aluminum cabin trim, and a premium sound system. A reconfigurable 8-inch screen replaces a traditional gauge cluster, and an 8-inch touch- and gesture-sensing center control panel display provides access to Chevrolet MyLink smartphone pairing technology.

When introducing the new 2014 Corvette Stingray, General Motors North America President Mark Reuss said: "I will eagerly put this car up against any of the top performance cars in the world. In terms of design, technology and performance, this car is second to none. And it is attainable."
