Mercedes Raises the Bar with 2019 CLS 4-Door Coupe Debut in L.A.

By Philly Murtha, November 30, 2017

German auto brand Mercedes-Benz unwrapped a sleek smooth, new 2019 CLS midsize premium sedan this week in Los Angeles. The third-generation CLS, which bowed initially in 2003, and was last redesigned in 2012, now captures the luxury maker’s new design language with cleaner lines and clear contours. Along with 4-door coupe elegance, the new CLS, now seats five, and will begin to reach U.S. dealerships next fall.

The new CLS front end design has a forward slant downward to the diamond grille and logo that widens out toward the base of the car. Low wideset headlights bolster the new car’s stance and the rear end treatment forms a neat package with an upward ducktail and two-section taillights that take cues from the new C-Class.

Extra electrical energy adds 21 more horsepower and more torque for acceleration even without the engine in action.  New hybrid engine technology helps the CLS powerplant generate the same output as a V-8, but with lower fuel consumption. EQ Boost helps produce 362 horsepower vs. 329 horses in the outgoing model and pushes thrust to 369 lb.-ft. of torque, up from 354 lb.-ft. of torque

Comfort and quiet acoustics are essential to the redesign. The sporty digital cockpit features a premium feel and look with a 12.3-in infotainment display, stitched leather seats that heat, ventilate and massage, 64-color ambient lighting, a climate control system that includes fragrance, a selection of drive modes and an audiophile sound system plus smartphone integration. The 2019 CLS rides on 19-in. light-alloy wheels and features advanced safety technology, including adaptive cruise, emergency stop, lane change, speed limit, braking and other driver assistance systems. A special note: An Edition 1 model with copper accents will be the first model to launch with special interior appointments and diamond grille with matte pins.
