Mercedes Lights Up Frankfurt Motor Show with Concept EQA EV
Mercedes-Benz this week previewed its first Concept EQA compact all-electric hatchback at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Concept EQA is a companion to the EQ sporty SUV concept introduced in Paris last year. Both EV concepts feature laser fiber lighting in front that forms shapes appearing as virtual black front grille panels. The Concept EQA’s expressive grille with lighting can even evoke the look of vertical copper windings of an electric motor with the Mercedes illuminated star badge at center.
Besides novel lighting embellishments, the new Concept EQA is equipped with two electric motors that increase output to over 200 kW with new battery components that aligns with all-wheel drive (AWD) and two drive modes—Sport and Sport Plus. Range or driving distance has improved from the current compact B-Class electric car’s 87 miles to a possible 250-mile range depending on battery systems, according to a statement from Mercedes. Plug-in and wireless inductive charging are faster and more efficient in the Concept EQA, Mercedes says.
The Concept EQA is the second model in Mercedes’ EQ (Electric Intelligence) sub-brand lineup. The compact hatchback is powered by one electric motor at the front axle and one at the rear with a 60-kW battery pack. Driving dynamics can be altered by varying AWD front-to-rear torque distribution. Total output for the electric motors is 268 horsepower with 368 lb.-ft. of torque to help the Concept EQA accelerate from 0-62 mph in about 5 seconds. A variety of power choices will provide different range levels.
Mercedes-Benz said in a statement that the Concept EQA exemplifies its new Sensual Purity design philosophy that reduces sharp edges and lines and focuses on futuristic lighting technology featuring laser fibers. The Concept EQA foreshadows the sub-brand’s production car model that is meant to be a volume-seller and will launch around 2020, according to news reports.
