Mercedes-Benz Concept S-Class Coupe Previews CL Replacement

By Jeff Youngs,
In premiering the Mercedes-Benz Concept S-Class Coupe at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the automaker suffered no shortage of superlatives in describing what is expected to become the production S-Class Coupe. Within just the first 200 words of the company's lengthy press release, the following descriptors are used:

"Truly exclusive"
"Defines the state of the art"
"Automotive masterpiece"
"A true design icon"

When the new S-Class Coupe arrives in showrooms, it will replace the existing CL-Class Coupe as the range-topping grand coupe of the lineup. According to Mercedes, the Concept S-Class Coupe's appearance revolves around the automaker's current design philosophy of "sensual clarity," which is rooted in what the company claims are core design values of tradition, emotion, and progressivism.

"At the center of our work is sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury, because this is precisely what gets to the heart of our brand philosophy--the bipolarity of intelligence and emotion," said Gorden Wagener, vice president design, Daimler AG. "The Concept S-Class Coupe combines tradition and emotion, and is a symbol for the embodiment of our design style of sensual clarity. The perfected design with self-assured style and the highly exclusive appointments make the coupe a true design icon and an expression of modern luxury."

Seating four people, the rear-drive Concept S-Class Coupe features the signature Mercedes-Benz "dropping line" profile contour, a diamond-pattern grille, LED headlights with eyebrow-style running lights, frameless doors, and 21-inch aluminum wheels.

According to Mercedes, designers took inspiration from a range of the Earth's topography, from the ocean to Utah rock formations, in creating the Concept S-Class Coupe's interior. For instance, the white instrument panel is "reminiscent of a whale's fins just before it re-enters the water," according to the automaker. Aluminum door panel trim sparkles in the light, and a Black Diamond central command controller operates free-floating dual 12.3-inch display screens and a center console display with a new world clock concept. Materials include a silk headliner, handmade carpets, and "haute-couture" tailoring for the calfskin-wrapped seats.

The Concept S-Class Coupe debuts an upgraded navigation system and new MoodGrid technology for the infotainment system. The MoodGrid software, developed by Gracenote, is designed to play music that fits a particular mood as selected by vehicle occupants, finding suitable tracks from a catalog of 18 million songs.

Under the Concept S-Class Coupe's hood, a twin-turbocharged, 4.6-liter V-8 engine makes 449 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. The car is also equipped with Intelligent Drive technology, which employs dual cameras, each creating a separate 3-D view of everything within 160 feet of the front of the vehicle in order to provide what Mercedes calls "6DVision." Total system monitoring range is 1,600 feet, and this data is combined with information gathered from radar and ultrasonic vehicle sensors to power various driving-assistance systems. For example, the Concept S-Class Coupe's Road Surface Scan system detects road undulations ahead and automatically adjusts the Magic Body Control suspension accordingly.

For now, the Concept S-Class Coupe is officially a concept car. However, Mercedes does say that it provides "a clear vision of the next model generation" of the company's large coupe.
