Mercedes-AMG Unwraps 53-Series Variants of 2019 CLS, E-Class Coupe & Cabriolet

By Philly Murtha, January 15, 2018

Mercedes-AMG, high performance division of Mercedes-Benz, will add three 53-series sporty, performance variants of 2019 CLS Sedan, E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet this year. These customized variants debuted this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, featuring enhanced power, sportier styling and ride with more efficiency. They will be available later this year.

The 53-series 2019 variants, which replace 43-series cars, share a new electrified 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder engine that includes a turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor to generate 429 horsepower and 384 lb.-ft. of torque. Mercedes-AMG officials say an EQ boost starter-alternator ups output by 21 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque during initial acceleration and powers the 48-Volt onboard electrical system. The energetic engine is matched with an AMG 9-speed automatic and an AMG performance 4Matic all-wheel drive system. The new AMG CLS 53, for instance, will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

New exterior treatments for the three variants are differentiated by twin-blade grille with black lattice pattern, aerodynamic A-wing front bumper, AMG side sill panels, and a rear bumper with diffuser insert and round chrome trim tailpipes. The rear end spoiler can be ordered in carbon fiber. Mercedes-AMG new variants can be ordered with air suspension and adaptive dampers for agility. Further tweaks have been made for optimum performance, handling and braking.

On the inside, these variants will include luxury upholstery, including leather and microfiber in combinations of colors plus trim choice in carbon fiber. The latest control display features a widescreen cockpit with virtual instruments that can be changed to three different visual formats. Touch control buttons on the special leather-wrapped steering wheel respond to swiping motion and the infotainment system can be operated by touchpad and by voice. The Series 53 cars’ rear seating has been redone with three full size seats, which split and fold. The intelligent driver assistance safety system from the S-Class will also be available in these three variants in modular packages that also include enhanced camera and radar systems.
