Mazda Boosts Handling, Safety, Comfort in 2018 CX-9 SUV

By Philly Murtha, September 06, 2017
Mazda, with U.S. headquarters in Irvine, CA, said the 2018 Mazda CX-9 midsize SUV will begin arriving at dealerships later this month. The CX-9, which was completely redone in 2016, has improvements for 2018, including G-Vectoring Control for better handling and extra safety features. The MSRP for the basic front-wheel-drive (FWD) version is $33,070 (including destination fee).

All 2018 Mazda CX-9 SUVs are powered by a standard turbocharged, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 250 horsepower when paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Exterior and interior design hasn’t changed much but the 2018 model improves comfort and egress in second-row and third-row seating, and the cabin has more insulation for a quieter ride, Mazda says.

Driving dynamics also are enhanced with Mazda’s standard G-Vectoring Control (GVC) system that reduces engine torque by putting more weight on the front wheels to make steering tighter and give the driver more control. Also standard on the 2018 Mazda CX-9 is a new advanced emergency braking system (SCBS) that kicks in below 19 mph in addition to blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The flagship Mazda 7-seat SUV is available in four trims—Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature—with optional premium packages and available all-wheel drive (AWD). Trim levels start with the base FWD CX-9 Sport with cloth seats, smartphone connectivity, and infotainment system. Extras on upgraded trim levels include: heated steering wheel and seats, leather seating, larger infotainment screen, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, rear park-assist sensors, and a sunroof, in addition to different wheel choices.

The top-of-the-line 2018 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD lists for $44,315 (minus destination fee) and includes advanced safety equipment and premium refinements such as a Nappa leather and rosewood trim interior, signature grille, and LED interior lighting. Three premium exterior paint choices are also available, including a new Soul Red Crystal plus Machine Gray Metallic and Snowflake White Pearl Mica.

It’s also notable that the 3-row crossover earned a “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2017.
