Lexus Unveils 2016 GS 200t during Pebble Beach Showcase of Cars
This past weekend, Lexus officials took the wraps off the 2016 GS 200t midsize premium car model at the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance showcase of cars in Monterey, CA. The new, sporty rear-wheel-drive (RWD) car is the third addition to the GS range and features a restyled, bold front end and standard bi-LED headlights.
The new GS 200t, which will reach Lexus dealerships this November, is powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission that generates 241 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Lexus estimates that the new GS 200t will average 33 mpg on the highway.
In addition, Lexus also is offering enhancements for its other two GS models—the GS 350 and GS 450h hybrid. The 2016 Lexus GS 350 gets a boost of 5 horsepower for 2016. Its 3.5-liter V-6 engine now generates 311 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque. Current EPA estimates suggest that the GS 350 averages 19 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway.
Lexus notes that its hybrid GS 450h continues to be powered by an Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V-6 engine and water-cooled, permanent-magnet electric motor that produces the equivalent of 338 horsepower. Paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the GS hybrid reaches 0-60 mph in 5.6-seconds, according to Lexus, and is rated by the EPA at 31 mpg in combined city and highway driving.
For 2016, these GS models also receive new front bumper and rocker panel designs with updated tail lights, rear trim, and new 18- and 19-in. wheels. New paint color choices for the 2016 GS include Matador Red Mica, Nightfall Mica, and Ultrasonic Blue Mica. Also, Lexus is offering new interior leather colors—Chateau and Noble Brown—in addition to new trim selections, including laser-cut wood and matte walnut. Rioja Red is offered on the F Sport trim level along with aluminum trim.
All 2016 GS models are equipped with 10 air bags and a number of safety technologies. For 2016, Lexus also offers an optional Safety System package with pre-collision warning system, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert and steering assist, intelligent high-beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control.
A multimedia package also is available on the 2016 Lexus GS. It includes a 12.3-in. screen with full-screen map capability when equipped with navigation, which comes standard on the GS 350 and 450 h models. Graphics and voice recognition have been enhanced, and buttons have been added to make it easier for the driver to operate the climate, phone, navigation, and audio controls. Some updates to the Lexus service system functionaltiy also have been made. An optional 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround-sound audio system also is available.
In addition to these updates, Lexus will also offer an optional F sport package for all three GS models that includes track-tuned chassis enhancements and staggered tire sizes.
