Lexus Debuts Refreshed 2018 NX Lux SUV in Shanghai

By Philly Murtha, April 19, 2017

Toyota Motor’s Lexus luxury brand unveiled a freshened 2018 NX compact premium SUV at the Shanghai Auto Show this week. The front look of the new NX—the second-best-selling model in the U.S. Lexus lineup—has been sharpened, ride and handling are enhanced, and the Lexus advanced safety system is standard, according to company officials. The revised luxury crossover will reach dealer showrooms in the United States and in China this fall, Automotive News reports.

The Lexus NX, which launched in 2014, gets a new front fascia, new bumper, and new lighting treatments. The upper spindle grille has been extended to blend more into the hood and the available new headlights feature triple projectors similar to those on the sporty Lexus LC coupe. The lower front bumper and taillights have been tweaked. Also, the vehicle includes available new 18-in. aluminum wheels along with several optional wheel finishes.

Controls are more user-friendly with buttons replaced by toggle switches. All controls, including shift knob and door handles, are done in a new satin metallic finish. A remote touch pad on the center console is larger and simpler to use, Lexus states, and the rear trunk gate now opens and closes with a foot gesture.

Changes have also been made to the NX’s chassis, including the introduction of the Lexus adaptive variable suspension (found in the Lexus LC 500 large premium sporty car) for improved stability, ride, and handling. Under the hood, the new NX is powered by a standard, turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the hybrid variant still relies on a 2.5-liter inline-4 combined with a pair of electric motors. The new NX also comes standard with Lexus’ advanced safety system that features collision-avoidance, intelligent cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams.
