Lexus Arms New IS with More Daring Look, New Technology

By Philly Murtha, April 25, 2016
This week at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, Lexus unveiled an updated IS compact premium car with daring, but still polarizing, front-end elements. Also new are infotainment and safety technology upgrades, plus new colors. The 2017 Lexus IS, which will reach dealer showrooms later this year, features new headlights, large air intakes integrated into the front bumper, and a more “in your face” spindle grille, plus a rear end that has been slightly redone with new rectangular chrome exhaust tips.

Lexus calls the updated look aggressive, and says the new front design gives the car an appearance of being constantly in motion. Among IS variants, the F Sport performance version boasts a Jet Black Metallic-coated grille, brake air ducts, and rides on new 10-spoke 17-in. wheels in a new design. Two new exterior paint colors are offered for the lineup: Deep Blue Mica and Graphite Black Glass Flake.

New in the cabin is a larger, 10.3-in. multimedia display screen that replaces the 7.0-in. version. More button controls are added to make the touch interface easier to use. The center control panel also has been refined, and there have been changes to the tach and speedometer. Interior colors have been updated with Chateau, a new combination of Ivory and light-gray, replacing the former color scheme.

The new IS Series will retain three engine choices. The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) IS 200t base model still comes equipped with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing with intelligence that is mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission and generates 241 horsepower and 258 ft.-lb. of torque. The IS 300 gets a more powerful V-6 that produces 255 horsepower, and the top-end IS 350 is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 306 horsepower. Engines come with either 6- or 8-speed automatics and can be ordered in RWD or all-wheel drive.

The new 2017 IS also comes with the Lexus Safety System+ that includes an advanced pre-collision warning system, lane-departure alert with steering assist, along with auto high beams and adaptive cruise control.
