Land Rover Evoque Receives Kudos from Magazine Editors

By Jeff Youngs, September 24, 2012
Land Rover's new 2012 Range Rover Evoque has been anointed as the SUV of the Year by Esquire Magazine. The newest member of the LR stable is the lightest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever produced, according to the British truckmaker, which is now owned by India's Tata Motors.

In late July, Evoque also ranked highest in overall satisfaction in its segment in the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.SM In fact, Evoque ranked higher in the entry premium crossover/SUV segment than two other models: BMW X3 and Audi Q5, respectively.

The latest honor from Esquire, a men's magazine published by the Hearst Corp., which is known for its emphasis on trends and new fiction, notes that the new SUV is "stylish, forward and elegant." The Indian/British crossover/SUV has received other kudos this year, including Bloomberg News' Crossover Car of the Year, Motor Trend's 2012 Sport/Utility of the Year, Decisive Magazine's Urban Truck of the Year, Automobile Magazine's 2012 All-Star Award and Best Luxury Compact Vehicle from Automotive Lease Guide (ALG).

Earlier this month, Esquire also named the new 2013 Cadillac ATS as its Car of the Year. Editors said about the new car that "perhaps it is the single most important thing Detroit has built in years."

Land Rover's Evoque debuted in the U.S. market last November. It is one of 12 compact premium crossovers (CUVs) in the U.S. market, which account for just 1.37% of industry sales, up a fraction from last year's 1.31% share through the first 8 months of the year. To date, segment sales tallied more than 133,100 units, up from 110,781 unit sales a year ago, based on data and analysis from J.D. Power's Power Information Network(R) (PIN) and its strategic partner LMC Automotive. The best-selling models in the segment are: Cadillac SRX, BMW X3, and the Audi Q5, respectively. To date this year, 5,676 Evoques have been sold in the United States.

Evoque is available in two versions: 2-door and 4-door. The suggested retail price range for both models begins just under $45,000 and $44,000, respectively. All Evoques have all-wheel drive and are powered by 240-horsepower, turbocharged, direct-injection 4-cylinder engines mated with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Land Rover claims that the Range Rover Evoque achieves an EPA-estimated 28 mpg highway/18 mpg city.
