Jeep Wrangler Willys Edition Revives Off-Road Heritage and Amenities

By Philly Murtha,
A 2014 Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition, which is based on the Wrangler Sport model, will bring a little war history and ruggedness together with special off-road hardware and amenities when it arrives in dealer showrooms early next year. A 2-door model will be available for an MSRP of $25,795 and the 4-door Unlimited will retail for about $29,595 (without delivery charges), according to Jeep.

Taking cues from the classic small utility vehicle, which dates back to the original classic CJs (civilian Jeeps) of the 1940s, the Willys Wheeler Edition will debut this week at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Upgraded hardware for off-roading includes a Dana 44 rear axle with Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential and 3.73 gears. BF Goodrich KM Mud Terrain tires are standard along with rock rails and a new Jeep Trail Rated Kit that includes a D-Ring and tow strap. A 4x4 part-time, 2-speed transfer case with a special low range gear ratio gives the vehicle added off-road capabilities, Jeep says.

The Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition comes in any Jeep Wrangler color, although the exterior design includes a special gloss black grille with black Jeep badge, gloss black front and rear bumper appliques, satin black 4-wheel-drive rear tailgage decals, and "Willys" hood decals. Black high-gloss 17-inch aluminum wheels are also part of the package along with a soft top and deep-tint rear windows.

Vehicle amenities include a connectivity group with SiriusXM satellite radio and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Iconic half-doors are also available as an option. Powering the Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition is a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard and a 5-speed automatic is optional, delivering up to 21 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.
