Infiniti Debuts Formula One-Inspired Project Black S Q60 Concept Car

By Philly Murtha, March 03, 2017

This week, Nissan Motor Co.’s Infiniti brand and the RenaultSport Formula One racing team are unveiling the Project Black S performance concept car based on the Q60. The Renault-Nissan Alliance partners will reveal the first Project Black S concept compact premium coupe with a potent hybrid powertrain and racing style enhancements at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Project Black S is a way for the Infiniti premium brand to evaluate consumer interest in creating a lineup of cars using new performance hybrid and race car technology inspired by RenaultSport Formula One team vehicles that now includes the Lotus F1 team. The Infiniti Q60 Black S model’s performance hybrid powertrain features what the automaker terms an “energy recovery system” (ERS) that boosts power and torque. The result is close to 500 horsepower and instant, lag-free acceleration, according to a statement from Infiniti. The concept also has an aggressive appearance with a bold stylish hood, grille, air intakes, and splitter.

France’s Renault and Japan’s Nissan formed the Renault-Nissan Alliance in 1999, which has led to numerous partner ventures, while still maintaining separate brand identities. This will be the first time that the automakers will use this racing technology in a production road car.
