Honda Unveils First Turbo Civic Si on YouTube and in New York
Honda this week revealed its first-ever turbocharged Civic Si variant available as a coupe or sedan on its YouTube channel. The all-new, sporty 2017 Civic Si sedan also appeared at the New York Auto Show as well and will be available in dealer showrooms next month with an MSRP in the mid-$20,000 range, according to Honda.
Peppier, sportier, and featuring more connectivity, the new Civic Si coupe and sedan variants are based on the EX-T trim level of the 10th-generation compact car. Power comes from a turbocharged, 1.5-liter, direct-injection 4-cylinder engine that produces 205 horsepower with 192 lb.-ft. of torque—an increase of 18 lb.-ft. from the prior Si variant—when partnered with a standard, short-throw, 6-speed manual transmission.
The latest Civic Si is lighter than the previous-generation model and is built on a more rigid body, according to Honda. Handling components have been upgraded and include a sport-tuned suspension, adaptive damper system, limited-slip differential, larger front brake rotors, and wider tires. Two driving modes can be selected—Normal or Sport.
The new Si will appeal to younger “tuner” drivers with the addition of a sportier exterior design with a black wing front grille and fascia and large side air intakes. The latest Civic Si rides on 18-in. 10-spoke alloy wheels outfitted with low-profile tires. In back, there’s a center-mounted chrome polygonal exhaust pipe and for a race car touch, there’s a rear decklid spoiler. A two-tone paint treatment is an available exclusive.
Inside the 2017 Civic Si features bolstered heated cloth front sport seats stitched in red with Si logos. Stitching is also carried over on the door inserts, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the leather shifter with aluminum knob. A red driver’s information display and 7-in. display with premium audio system, sporty aluminum pedals, and carbon instrument panel complete the cockpit. Extras also include intelligent windshield wipers and walk-away door locking. Driver-assistance systems include vehicle stability and traction control and lane-watch technology.
