High-Performance Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV Bows in China

High-Performance Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV Bows in China

By Philly Murtha, April 25, 2018
Alfa Romeo, a brand with a true Formula One racing heritage, debuted its first high-performance compact premium SUV, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, at Auto China 2018 this week. The newest member of the Quadrifoglio “Quick One” family, features what Alfa describes as Italian design passion and motorsports performance DNA. A performance alternative to German entries, it can outpace a Porsche Macan.

The new Stelvio Quadrifoglio is reported by Alfa to be the fastest production SUV in its class and is shown with Q4 all-wheel drive (AWD) that allows for choices of driving modes. Power comes from an aluminum 2.9-liter V-6 twin-turbo-charged gasoline engine developed with engineering input from luxury sports car maker Ferrari. The engine, borrowed from the Giulio Quadrifoglio sports car, delivers 505 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque partnered with an 8-speed automatic. This “quick” SUV also accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 176 mph, while boasting good fuel economy with electronically-controlled cylinder deactivation (achieving an estimated 31.4 mpg).

Alfa’s stylish Stelvio Quadrifoglio rides on large 20-in. burnished alloy wheels and sounds like a sports car on the track. Overall weight is reduced by using ultra-light aluminum for suspension, brakes, doors, wheel arches, trunk and tailgate. The track-ready SUV also provides differential Alfa active torque vectoring for superior handling and suspension and shocks are performance-tuned stiff. For extra control, a braking system with Brembo carbon discs is optional.

Inside, the cabin is driver-centric, but includes a few details from its sibling Giulio Quadrifoglio sports car, including column-mounted aluminum paddle shifters and thin steering wheel with controls grouped together. Dashboard trim is carbon fiber and seats are black leather and Alcantara with a choice of red, white, green and dark grey stitching. Lightweight Sparco seats are optional for sports car enthusiasts to provide extra support in extreme driving and for road trip comfort. In addition, Alfa Romeo offers a standard Stelvio premium compact SUV that is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo-charged engine that produces 280 horsepower with an 8-speed automatic.
