Genesis Unveils Sleek Essentia Electric Concept in New York

By Philly Murtha, March 29, 2018
Genesis, Hyundai’s premium brand, unwrapped the Essentia all-electric Concept Touring Coupe to redefine “athletic elegance” for future models at the New York International Auto Show. Poised for the future, the high-performance Genesis Essentia Gran Turismo Concept’s body is made of super light carbon fiber and is the first Genesis model to be electric and powered by multiple electric motors and lithium-ion batteries to jet out from 0-60 mph in 3 seconds.

Featuring a long transparent hood that ends in a Formula-1 race car nose, and swept-back cabin, Essentia is finished in Stardust Gray Metallic paint. Front fascia incorporates the Genesis Crest grille that emphasizes aerodynamics flanked by signature Genesis Quad slim flush light systems first introduced on the GV80 Concept. Functional air outlets behind front wheels reduce drag.

Butterfly doors for easier entry and exit add to the car’s visual structure with tech cues to the future including a sensor mounted in the B-pillar that integrates fingerprint controls and biometric facial recognition for opening and closing doors.

Muscular rear wheel arches with a rear diffuser surrounded by carbon fiber form integrated air vents and flush rear Quad lighting creates the look of rear haunches ready to spring for the grand coupe that rides on intricate star-shape copper trimmed bespoke wheels.

Inside Essentia, mixes high fashion and classic color combinations. Cognac-colored leather with chevron-quilting upholsters two cockpit style driver and passenger seats that are divided by a slim center console in Oxford Blue leather. The driver faces an 8-in. wide screen display with instrument cluster. Interior accents are done in layered carbon fiber. Rear seating covered in Blue Velvet is accessed through butterfly-doors and behind these seats is a luggage compartment.

Although the Essentia is strictly a Concept, the goal for Genesis is to create objects of desire and passion and inspiration with connectivity and technology, according to a Genesis official. Essentia is the brand’s first Concept to be a true GT car with a multi-motor electric powertrain.
