Genesis Debuts GV80 Fuel Cell SUV Concept at New York Auto Show
The Genesis luxury brand, spun off by the Hyundai group in 2015, unveiled its first luxury concept SUV at the New York Auto Show this week. The midsize premium GV80 Fuel Cell Concept crossover is powered by the latest plug-in hydrogen fuel cell powertrain technology and may reach the market in a slightly different production version in the next two years.
The swept back, futuristic and sophisticated Genesis GV80 relies on Genesis’ upscale design philosophy of “athletic elegance.” Genesis plans to market eight models and this would be the fourth model in its lineup so far. Genesis uses G nomenclature for its car models and likely will use GV for its crossovers.
The GV80 Fuel Cell Concept SUV is dramatically highlighted in a bespoke Ice Granite paint finish. A signature Genesis crest grille with a diamond motif mesh and wideset quad headlights adorn the front end. Aerodynamically-styled fascia include air intakes around the front wheels and side rocker panels. Muscular fenders bear down on 23-in. mesh alloy wheels designed to reduce vehicle weight and cool a large brake system. Electric door handles are flush underneath the crease line for aerodynamics. The new Genesis Concept SUV ends with a powerful rear end with laser fiber optic taillights.
Along with a refined exterior, the interior features a bridge instrument panel that stretches across the front of the cabin. A 22-in. curved display is inset and includes information accessed by touch control for the driver. Versatile storage compartments are integrated into the modern, sleek interior that features quilted semi-aniline leather appointed seats, door panel inserts and center console. Architexture suede and ash wood accents along with polished metal inlays highlight the lower center console area. Touch controls all functions such as navigation, entertainment, communication and customized driver settings.
