Ford Confirms Award-Winning 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine for 2014 Fiesta

Ford Confirms Award-Winning 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine for 2014 Fiesta

By Jeff Youngs, November 21, 2012
The updated 2014 Ford Fiesta will offer a turbocharged, 1.0-liter 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine, giving the subcompact model "the best fuel economy of any non-hybrid car sold in America," according to the automaker, which is making a prediction in advance of official EPA fuel-economy certification.

With 123 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque, the optional 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine provides 3 additional horsepower and 36 more lb.-ft. of torque than the less efficient 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine installed in the 2013 Fiesta. Ford says the new Fiesta EcoBoost "will join the most fuel-efficient lineup in Ford Motor Company's history" and points out that the company "will offer eight vehicles rated at 40 mpg or higher--more than any other automaker."

The first 3-cylinder engine in the company's history, the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine introduces several new powertrain technologies to the Ford engine family, including an offset crankshaft, variable oil pump, split cooling system, timing belt immersed in engine oil, and a "super-small, responsive" turbocharger. Ford says it elected not to include a traditional balance shaft for the 3-cylinder engine, because it would add weight and increase friction. Instead, the new EcoBoost 3-cylinder is externally balanced, reflecting another new approach by Ford engineers.

First offered in the European version of the Ford Focus, the company's 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine won the International Engine of the Year award in April of 2012. The final price of the Fiesta's EcoBoost engine option is not yet set, but Ford points out that in other models an EcoBoost engine typically adds $995 to the price of a vehicle.
