Ford Beefs Up 2017 F-Series with Extra Torque, Acceleration

By Philly Murtha, May 04, 2016
This fall, Ford is upping engine torque and overall performance for its 2017 F-Series large pickup. The Detroit automaker is introducing a redesigned, lighter-weight EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 that provides an extra 30 lb.-ft. of torque when paired with an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission that also is lighter and more efficient.

Ford’s second-generation EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 engine still will produce 365 horsepower, but will be capable of producing 450 lb.-ft. of torque, which beats many gasoline and diesel-powered rivals, according to the automaker. Some 60% of all F-150s sold are powered by EcoBoost engines, Ford says. The F-Series truck is also available with a conventional V-6 or V-8.

The new, higher-torque engine features Ford’s first new dual-direct and port fuel-injection system, which includes two injectors per cylinder to improve power output, efficiency, and reduce emissions, Ford says. New turbochargers, pistons, a lighter turbine wheel, and other technology changes have been made to lighten weight. In addition, the new engine features standard auto start/stop for better fuel economy and fewer CO2 emissions due to less idling.

The second-generation EcoBoost engine will be partnered with Ford’s all-new, lighter-weight 10-speed automatic transmission to deliver better acceleration and performance than the previous 6-speed automatic, according to the automaker. Three overdrive gears and a wider gear ratio are available to improve fuel efficiency at highway speeds, while maintaining the capability of towing 12,000 lbs., Ford claims. The new transmission is lighter since it is made without any cast-iron components. Another 2 lbs. of weight have been eliminated with an integrated torque converter/turbine clutch.
