Fiat Offers Low Lease Payment on New Fiat 500e, Free Rental Cars

By Jeff Youngs, April 17, 2013
If you think electric cars are too expensive, Fiat may have a deal that appeals to you. The new 2013 Fiat 500e, initially to be offered exclusively to residents of California in time for summer, can be leased for 36 months at $199 per month, plus tax and $999 down. That's the same deal offered for a regular Fiat 500 with a traditional gasoline engine, effectively removing price as a hurdle to electric vehicle ownership. Plus, the lessee of the 500e gets to keep a $2,500 state tax rebate, which makes the electric Fiat 500 more affordable than the gasoline version--before factoring in fuel savings.

The new 2013 Fiat 500e offers 87 miles of range and a 116 MPGe rating for combined city and highway driving. The car employs an 83 kW electric motor, 24 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack, and generates 111 horsepower and 147 lb.-ft. of torque. The powertrain's torque is available from the moment the driver steps on the accelerator, giving the 2,980-pound car a zero-to-60 mph time of 9.1 seconds, by Fiat's stopwatch.

Interior passenger and cargo space are the same as a standard Fiat 500. The 500e's battery pack is installed under the car's floor, and the redesigned suspension rides an inch higher to help accommodate the battery. Fiat says the 500e can be recharged in 4 hours using a 240-volt outlet and an optional Level 2 charger. Plug it into a standard household outlet, and the car needs as much as 23 hours of charging if the battery is completely drained, Fiat says.

Just in case a 500e owner wants to take a longer trip, Fiat includes 12 free days of Enterprise Rent-A-Car service each year. The days can be used individually, or consecutively, as necessary, effectively eliminating concerns about electric vehicle range.
