"Designer" Volvo XC90 Excellence Takes Swedish Luxury to a New Level

By Philly Murtha, March 24, 2016
Volvo, the Swedish car brand owned by China’s Geely Group, previewed at the 2016 New York International Auto Show the Excellence ultra-luxury variant of its best-selling Volvo XC90 midsize premium SUV. The Volvo XC90 Excellence variant will be produced in a limited number and will be available in U.S. dealer showrooms this summer at a suggested sticker of $104,900.

Major upgrades are interior modifications. The XC90 Excellence has been reconfigured to provide seating for 4 instead of 7. Another set of seats similar to those for the driver and front passenger are also set up in the second row, to offer “first-class seating” for 4 people. Comfort is king with more legroom in the second row. Rear seats recline and include massage and ventilation.

The rear area of the cabin features a retractable-control touch screen, folding tables, refrigerator with beverage glass holders, heating/cooling cupholder, and renowned Swedish Orrefors crystal glassware. The interior is upholstered with Nappa leather and has open-pore wood trim. A partition divides the cabin from the cargo area for an optimal sound environment when listening to a high-end 20-speaker, 1400-watt Bowers & Wilkins audio system. Another luxury touch: an Orrefors crystal gear shifter.

Volvo’s XC90 Excellence variant is powered by Volvo’s T8 twin-engine plug-in hybrid electric powertrain that generates 400 horsepower. Options in this design-rich SUV include a child seat concept that replaces the front passenger seat and a lounge concept, where the front passenger seat is replaced with a footrest and LCD screen.
