Coming to America: China’s GAC Motor Debuts Enverge SUV Concept in Detroit

By Philly Murtha, January 16, 2018
GAC Motor, the Chinese automaker that plans to sell models here in the United States in late 2019, unveiled an extreme, futuristic Enverge SUV Concept with gull-wing doors in Detroit this week. GAC Motor is not the only Chinese automaker to manufacture vehicles for the U.S. market. General Motors sells the Chinese-made Buick Envision here, and Swedish automaker Volvo is owned by China’s Geely Group. Interestingly, China’s GAC Trumpchi brand ranks above industry average, and is one of the higher-ranking Chinese (domestic) brands in the J.D. Power 2017 China Initial Quality StudySM (IQS).

Geared for the U.S. market, the attention-grabbing Enverge electric 2-door Concept compact SUV is said to have an all-electric battery range of 370 miles before recharge, outpacing the Tesla Model 3’s range. A 71-kWh battery can be recharged wirelessly. Reports say that it can be recharged for 10 minutes to cover a distance of 240 miles.

Since it’s a concept, imagination reigns. Headlights can be detached to serve as lanterns. A floating digital dashboard screen is a focal point in the concept’s cabin. Digital screens are also placed in the crossover’s side windows.

The automaker also debuted its GA4 midsize sedan during the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) previews. It will reach showrooms in China later this month.

Current media reports say that GAC hopes to market its G8S premium midsize SUV in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2019. However, GAC must still clear U.S. quality and distribution hurdles before coming to this market. A partnership with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has been signed, and media reports indicate the supplier Delphi and tiremaker Continental also have expressed interest in possible alliances.

GAC, a unit of the Guangzhou Automobile Group, one of China’s larger passenger-vehicle producers, sells 10 models in China, including six SUVs. The Trumpchi GS4 compact SUV was GAC’s best-selling model in 2017, with sales of about 300,000 units, according to LMC Automotive, J.D. Power’s auto forecasting partner.
