Chevy Reveals New 2016 Camaro, Promises 30-Plus MPG

By Jeff Youngs, May 17, 2015

Chevrolet revealed the sixth-generation 2016 Camaro yesterday at an enthusiast and media event on Belle Isle in Detroit. The Gen Six Camaro offers higher levels of performance, technology and refinement, and a nimbler driving experience, according to the automaker.

The redesigned Camaro also offers a broader selection of all-new powertrain combinations. Engine choices include a 2.0-liter turbo, all-new 3.6-liter V-6, and, in the Camaro SS, a 6.2-liter V-8 (dubbed "LT1"), which delivers 455 horsepower and 455 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful Camaro SS ever. Each engine is available with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.0-liter base engine makes 275 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, while delivering a maker-estimated 30-plus mpg on the highway, and 0-60 mph acceleration in less than 6 seconds. The new 3.6-liter V-6 engine features direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and a cylinder-deactivation system to save fuel. It makes 335 horsepower and 284 lb.-ft. of torque.

The new, sixth generation of Camaro also features a leaner, stiffer platform and slightly smaller dimensions, plus a dramatically sculpted exterior that reduces aerodynamic lift for better handling and enhanced efficiency, Chevy says. Also, Magnetic Ride Control active suspension is available on the Camaro SS for the first time.

Only two features carry over from the fifth-generation Camaro to the new Gen Six: the rear bowtie emblem and the SS badge. Otherwise, it's virtually an all-new model, with mass reduced by 200 lbs. or more, depending on the trim level, and structural rigidity increased by 28%, according to the Chevrolet.

The new Drive Mode selector includes Snow/Ice, Tour, Sport, and (on the SS only) Track settings. The Interior Spectrum Lighting offers 24 different ambient lighting effects on the dash, door panels, and center console, and the visual effects include high-definition, configurable color displays, including available dual 8-in. screens.

The new 2016 Camaro comes in 10 exterior colors and five interior color combinations. Various lighting options, wheel options, stripe packages, and accessories are also available.

All 2016 Chevy Camaros offer Brembo brakes, standard on SS and optional on the LT. The LT features standard 18-in. wheels with Goodyear Eagle Sport all-season tires and available 20-in. wheels with Eagle F1 Asymmetric all-season run-flat tires. The Camaro SS features standard 20-in. aluminum wheels with Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 run-flat tires.

The new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro goes on sale this fall.
