Chevrolet Debuts Fastest, Most Extreme Camaro ZL1 1LE Coupe

By Philly Murtha, February 27, 2017
Chevrolet provided a few details about its track-ready 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE in advance of the 2017 Daytona 500, held yesterday in Daytona Beach, FL. At the race, NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon led the pack in a 2017 Camaro ZL1 pace car. Chevy’s new “production sports car” performance package for the 2018 version of the Camaro will debut later this year. Racing-based dynamics, adjustable suspension, aerodynamic technologies, and exclusive Goodyear Eagle Supercar tires are some of the elements that define this “extreme” sports car package. Pricing for the new midsize sporty car will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Powered by Chevrolet’s most robust, 650-horsepower, supercharged LT4 engine that is matched with a 6-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Match, the supreme ZL1 1LE also includes Brembo brakes with red 1LE-badged calipers. Inside, the new extreme sports car features standard dual-zone automatic climate control, Bose premium audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Chevrolet adds a carbon fiber rear wing with air deflectors, racing-inspired splitter, and dive planes on the front fascia to help the car stick harder and faster in turns.

The latest pony car’s suspension takes cues from race cars like the Z/28 with lightweight Multimatic suspension spool valve front and rear dampers for precise wheel and vehicle control, Chevy says. The front-end ride height is adjustable, and a rear stabilizer bar also is adjustable. Curb weight has been reduced by at least 60 lbs. due to thinner rear glass and a fixed back seat. Additionally, all components can be changed out quickly just like on a race track.

Wheels are 19-in. lightweight forged aluminum and measure 1 inch wider and 1 inch smaller in diameter than standard ZL1 wheels. The special Camaro ZL1 rides on Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires.

In early tests, Chevrolet’s new ZL1 1LE Camaro was 3 seconds faster than the standard ZL1 Coupe when it lapped General Motors’ 2.9-mile Milford Road Course test track that features 18 turns.
