Buick Bolsters Lineup with Peppy 2016 Encore Sport Touring SUV

By Philly Murtha, July 20, 2015

This fall, Buick is adding new spirit to its small Encore SUV range by introducing a 2016 Encore Sport Touring variant with sporty design cues and a peppier 1.4-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

The Encore small crossover utility vehicle, which seats five and is made by General Motors in South Korea, boasts a winged rear spoiler, 18-in. aluminum-finish wheels, and body-color door handles.

"Encore is a catalyst for introducing a new generation of customers to the brand," said Duncan Aldred, U.S. vice president of Buick, who said in a statement that the new Encore variant gives customers the option of enhanced performance, technology, and better fuel economy.

A new 1.4-liter turbo engine with direct fuel injection, mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission, generates 153 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. The motor packs 11% more power and 20% more torque than the standard Encore powerplant, Buick says. Start/stop technology also helps reduce fuel consumption in bumper-to-bumper driving or when at a stoplight.

Buick's optional Convenience package also is standard on the Encore Sport Touring, featuring a 120-volt power outlet, auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, dual-zone climate control, fog lamps, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitor, and remote engine start. All-wheel drive (AWD), a premium Bose sound system, navigation radio, and a moonroof are available.

Standard features on all 2016 Encores include blue accent halogen headlights, rearview camera system, 10 air bags, heated outside rearview mirrors, electric power steering, front disc brakes, fold-flat front passenger seat, an IntelliLink voice-activated infotainment system with 7-in. full color display screen, and OnStar 4G connectivity.

The Encore, the best-selling entry in Buick's five-model lineup, is the only one to post higher sales for the brand this year. Through the first half of 2015, Encore deliveries were up 29% (30,549 units vs. 23,657 unit sales in the same period of 2014), based on sales data collected by J.D. Power and LMC Automotive.
