BMW Updates 2018 4 Series with Minor Styling, Handling Tweaks

By Philly Murtha, January 25, 2017
BMW this week revealed a few updates for its 2018 4 Series compact premium car that will be available as a coupe, convertible, and 4-door Gran Coupe. Styling has been freshened with a new front apron and new rear apron to differentiate the latest model more from its sibling 3 Series. Styling cues were adapted from the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe shown in 2012, according to BMW officials. Two new exterior paint choices, new upholstery, and a selection of four new wheel designs will be available when the updated 4 Series reaches dealer showrooms in March.

Additionally, BMW says the 4 Series, which will be offered in 430i and 440i xDrive configurations, features a stiffer suspension that has been tuned for better handling, stability, and road agility.

Major changes to the 2018 4 Series include new front and rear hexagonal front and full-rear LED lighting systems. Two new paint colors are optional: Sunset Orange and Snapper Rocks Blue, and BMW is offering four new wheel rim designs with a choice of 18- or 19-in. alloy wheels.

Inside, the car features a digital cockpit cluster of gauges and a newer infotainment system. There’s also a more advanced navigation system with enhanced smartphone connectivity. New upholstery options include three colors of leather with contrast stitching: Midnight Blue, Cognac Dakota, and Ivory White. Interior trim can be ordered in Carbon Aluminum. Two new equipment packages for the 4 Series include the Luxury package and the M Sport package.

The new 4 Series rides on a stiffer suspension with more precise steering of a standard sports steering wheel, BMW says. The U.S. variants come standard with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 248 horsepower or a turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline 6 that produces 320 horsepower. BMW offers a choice of a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission, plus all-wheel-drive systems.
