BMW Unveils First-Ever 2018 M3 CS Special Edition Sport Sedan for U.S.

By Philly Murtha, November 08, 2017
BMW this week revealed its first-ever 2018 M3 CS special-edition compact premium car that combines performance modifications and more power in a practical sedan. Only 1,200 of these athletic M3 CS variants will be built, with 550 copies available for order in the United States starting in May 2018. Pricing will be disclosed closer to launch.

For agility and better handling, more carbon fiber is used in the variant’s body components—such as the hood and roof—to reduce weight by 110 lbs. A rear carbon fiber “Gurney Flap” spoiler plus rear diffuser add an aerodynamic edge and reduce rear-axle lift. BMW engineers have modified the M3 CS suspension’s spring/damper settings for optimal dynamics with three driving modes. An active M differential comes standard.

BMW’s new M3 CS is powered by a peppier, twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine that produces 453 horsepower—28 more than the standard M3. The motor achieves peak torque of 443 lb.-ft., with 37 lb.-ft. more thrust, matched with the 7-speed M double-clutch transmission. According to BMW, the M3 CS accelerates from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 174 mph with a throaty roar from its 4-tailpipe CS exhaust system.

BMW gloss trim and darkened rear lighting add a special exterior touch. Five paint colors are offered, including standard Alpine White plus San Marino Blue Metallic, Lime Rock Grey Metallic, Frozen Dark Blue II Metallic, or Black Sapphire Metallic. The M3 CS rides on light-alloy, 10-spoke wheels in Orbit Gray that take cues from BMW’s M4 race car series. BMW M compound brakes are standard, while M Carbon Ceramic brakes designed for race action are optional.

A sporty race car feel is emphasized inside the passenger compartment that features Alcantara and two-tone Sliverstone and Black Merino leather lightweight seats. The M3 CS still boasts the M sports steering wheel wrapped in Anthracite Alcantara and features a red start/stop button to ignite action. Premium elements still abound, including automatic climate control, navigation, and a Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system.
