BMW Confirms 2014 4 Series Coupe and Convertible

By Jeff Youngs, December 07, 2012
BMW has confirmed that replacements for the 3 Series Coupe and 3 Series Convertible will be named the 4 Series, and the new models are foreshadowed by the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe that will debut in January at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

The automaker is positioning the new 2014 BMW 4 Series as a "mid-range" model. Longer, lower and wider than the 3 Series, the new 2014 4 Series is also equipped with a longer wheelbase and a wider track, and will offer styling that is different from the 3 Series models. According to BMW, "the '4' stands for greater sportiness, greater exclusivity and even clearer differentiation from the BMW 3 Series range."

The Concept 4 Series Coupe appearing in Detroit "displays a clear link with the BMW 3 Series family" but is more dynamic, according to BMW. Painted an exclusive Liquid Metal Silver hue developed specifically for this concept vehicle, the BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe features satin-finish exterior detailing, hexagonal LED headlights, L-shaped taillights, twin exhaust outlets, and 20-inch aluminum wheels. A new fiber-optic lighting element connects the headlights and the grille to, as BMW asserts, give the Concept 4 Series Coupe a broader appearance in the front.

Aerodynamics play a role in the Concept 4 Series Coupe's front styling. Its signature twin-kidney grille is closed off with black painted slats to improve aerodynamics and increase fuel economy on the highway, and the car features both an EfficientDynamics "Air Curtain" frontal design that channels air around the front wheels to maximize mileage and an "Air Breather" aperture behind the front wheels to further reduce drag, according to BMW.

BMW Individual custom-tailored the Concept 4 Series Coupe's interior in Black and Schiaparelli Brown, executed with a "layered" approach. BMW says the cabin wraps around the driver, with critical controls grouped for easy reach and use. Materials include sustainably tanned leather, hand-braided leather detailing on the seats, and Natural Chestnut wood trim. The Concept 4 Series Coupe's rear seat is contoured to resemble individual buckets joined together.

BMW did not reveal powertrain details, but the production versions of the 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe and 4 Series Convertible models are likely to share their engines and transmissions with the 3 Series Sedan and Wagon.
