Audi to Preview Most Energetic TT RS Sports Car in New York

By Philly Murtha, April 05, 2017
Volkswagen Group’s premium Audi brand has offered a few details about its most powerful 2018 Audi TT RS sports car that debuts at the 2017 New York Auto Show next week. The compact sporty TT RS variant, which is closest to Audi’s R8 performance car, hasn’t been available in the United States since 2013 but will be available this spring with a manufacturer suggested price of $64,900 (minus fees).

The permanent quattro all-wheel-drive TT RS is faster than any other TT model, Audi says. The automaker also states that the newest TT sports car variant can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The 2018 TT RS is powered by a new, 2.5-liter, 5-cylinder turbocharged engine that generates 400 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque when partnered with Audi’s 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The TT RS can achieve a top speed of 155 mph that can be upped to 174 mph with an optional Dynamic plus package.

Lighter aluminum construction is a major advantage, lowering the car’s weight to reduce friction and increase power, according to Audi. The car’s new engine also is more compact and is 57 lbs. lighter than the previous powertrain. Suspension and chassis are more rigid and tuned with Audi’s Drive Select system offering four drive modes that control comfort and dynamics.

The 2018 Audi TT RS exterior and aerodynamics also have been upgraded. The car features larger air intakes, a fixed rear-wing spoiler, and large oval tailpipes. Full LED headlights and taillights are standard, and special rear taillights with a 3D design are optional. The TT RS rides on standard 19-in. wheels or optional 20-in. forged wheels in silver or anthracite that is part of an available Black optic package.

Inside, there’s inspiration from the R8, including a flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters and satellite controls. Other accessories include aluminum door sills and stainless pedals. Additional features include an infotainment system with virtual cockpit featuring a 12.3-in. display that provides tire pressure, torque, and g-force information. A navigation and smartphone interface and Audi Connect are available along with a high-end 12-speaker audio system.
