Audi Debuts Performance R8 Spyder Sports Car in New York

By Philly Murtha, March 23, 2016
Audi unveiled at the 2016 New York International Auto Show an all-new 2017 R8 Spyder convertible sports car that nearly matches the R8 coupe in performance and comes with a top that opens or closes in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 31.1 mph.

The global debut of the next-generation open-top R8 at the New York Auto Show is part of Audi’s plan to launch a dozen all-new models over the next three years, according to company officials. The R8 Spyder and 2017 R8 V10 coupe share nearly 50% of the same parts as the legendary R8 LMS racecar.

The R8 Spyder and coupe are powered by a 5.2-liter V-10 engine. When mated with a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, the engine produces 540 horsepower and the car can reach 62 mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 197.7 mph, Audi says. A lightweight cloth roof tapers into two fins to give the car a more athletic look than the coupe. The convertible also features an interior that is shaped like a racecar’s, with easy-to-operate controls and a 12.3-in. digital virtual cockpit that provides a screen view of driving dynamics.

Audi officials point out that the launch of the R8 in 2008 has been instrumental to the brand’s product development. The R8 was the first model in Audi’s lineup to introduce LED headlight technology, now featured throughout the brand’s lineup. The R8 Spyder is hand-built at a facility in Germany. Pricing, specs, and options will be revealed later.
