Audi Debuts Drop-Top 2017 R8 V10 Spyder Sports Car

By Philly Murtha, January 26, 2017
This spring, Audi will begin selling its “strikingly more athletic” 2017 R8 V10 Spyder performance sports car that features a roof that opens or closes in just 20 seconds at 30+ mph speeds. Audi reports that the new, more powerful Spyder variant will zing from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds—the same as the R8 coupe—and it will reach a top speed of 198 mph. Pricing for this street-legal race car, manufactured in Italy, begins at a suggested $175,100, without destination and other fees.

As its name implies, the 2017 R8 V10 Spyder is powered by the same naturally aspirated V-10 engine as the Spyder coupe and three Audi R8 LMS GT3 cars that will participate in the IMSA race season at Daytona, FL. The Spyder’s street race-car engine delivers a spectacular 540 horsepower and 395 lb.-ft. of torque, which is more powerful than the preceding R8 Spyder’s powertrain. The engine is matched with the same S-tronic 7-speed dual-clutch transmission as in the coupe.

Audi’s 2017 R8 V10 Spyder also is built on the newer lightweight architecture that uses aluminum and carbon fiber for rigidity and features a suspension that is 50% stiffer than the previous-generation R8 Spyder, according to a statement from Audi.

On the outside, the redone 2017 R8 V10 Spyder features an anthracite gray honeycomb grille, full LED lighting systems, and 19-in. aluminum wheels in silver finish. Inside is a racecar cockpit with a virtual 12.3-in. instrument panel display with easy-to-use controls, according to Audi. Heated, adjustable power sport seats are standard, with a multi-functional sport steering wheel that includes paddle shifters and buttons to start/stop the engine and control the Audi drive select system. A premium Bang & Olufsen audio system with 13 speakers completes the package, along with Audi Connect’s multifaceted infotainment system functions.
