Acura to Unveil Refreshed 2018 RLX Sport Sedan in Monterey

By Philly Murtha, August 10, 2017
American Honda Motor Co.’s premium Acura brand previews a revised 2018 Acura RLX flagship midsize Sport Hybrid variant next week at Monterey Automotive Week in Monterey, CA. The updated, top-of-the-line midsize premium sedan comes with more luxury amenities and technology, and also offers hybrid-electric power in one of two variants that bear Acura’s new signature diamond pentagon-shaped grille. The new RLX will begin reaching dealer showrooms in November.

The new all-wheel-drive (AWD) RLX sport sedan delivers a combined 377 horsepower with a V-6 and three electric motors that shares handling technology with Acura’s exotic halo NSX supercar. The Sport Hybrid’s Super-Handling technology and AWD system produce what Acura claims is instant acceleration, more precise handling, and better control in all kinds of weather, in addition to offering excellent fuel efficiency.

A more modest, conventionally-powered RLX also is available. This variant will rely on the same 310-horsepower V-6 powertrain as in the Sport Hybrid, but will be mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission that offers what Acura calls its all-wheel-steer system that delivers what Acura claims to be a more refined driving experience and improved acceleration.

Acura’s new Precision Crafted Performance design philosophy adds the trademark new pentagon-shaped grille, a more sculpted hood, new wheel designs, bolder redone LED taillight system, dual exhaust tips, and a gloss black rear diffuser.

Three new exterior paint colors include Brilliant Red Metallic and Majestic Black Pearl. New RLX interiors will feature upgraded upholstery choices and redone seats that feature high-contrast piping and stitching. A sophisticated new “Espresso” interior treatment is optional.

Both RLX variants will feature the AcuraWatch advanced safety system suite that includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and road-departure mitigation technologies. Enhanced traffic-jam assist technology also has been added.

During next week’s Monterey event, visitors will be able to preview the 2018 RLX—one of six models in Acura’s lineup—at the Carmel-By-The Sea Concours on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
