Acura Calls New 2013 ILX "Underpowered"

By Jeff Youngs, December 12, 2012
In an interview with Automotive News, John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, said that the new 2013 Acura ILX is "underpowered, and consumers don't see the value." Mendel was referring to the new compact luxury sedan's failure to hit expected sales projections.

The new Acura ILX is based on the same platform as the Honda Civic, but offers unique styling, interior design and equipment. Three models are offered, including a gas-electric hybrid variant, with prices starting at $26,795. For comparison purposes, a 2013 Honda Civic EX-L with a navigation system is priced at $24,555.

A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard in the Acura, whereas the Civic is equipped with a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. The Acura's larger engine generates 150 horsepower and 140 lb.-ft. of torque, 10 more horsepower and 12 additional lb.-ft. of torque than the Honda Civic model. It is this 2.0-liter engine that Mendel referred to as "underpowered."

A 201-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is optional for the Acura ILX. This is the same power plant as in the sporty Honda Civic Si, and in the larger and heavier Acura TSX. However, in the ILX, it is offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox and is not available with the optional Technology package, which includes a navigation system, premium sound system, voice-recognition system, upgraded climate control system, and more.

Mendel said about the ILX, "The car was planned for a 2.4 automatic, and we're working to fulfill that."

The Acura ILX is expected to replace the Acura TSX, a revised version of the European-market Honda Accord, when the TSX reaches the end of its lifecycle. However, since the ILX debuted in May of 2012, the TSX has outsold it the majority of the time. Automotive News also notes that the Buick Verano and Volkswagen CC are outselling the new ILX.
