2019 BMW M2 Competition Bows in China with Extra Power

By Philly Murtha, April 18, 2018
BMW this week previewed its 2019 M2 Competition performance sports coupe with 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed double-clutch transmission (DCT) and inline 6-cylinder engine that generates 405 horsepower. The new high-performance small premium sporty 2-door that replaces the M2 Coupe will be unveiled next week at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show and will reach BMW showrooms this summer. Pricing will be revealed nearer launch.

What’s new? The 2019 M2 Competition thrusts into the high-performance arena with the same twin-turbocharged S55 3.0-liter straight-6 engine that powers M3 and M4 coupes. A burst of 405 hp and 406 lb.-ft. of torque allows this sporty M2 Competition to throttle from 0-60 mph in 4 seconds with the automatic and 4.2 seconds with standard manual, according to the German premium automaker. The M2 Competition’s top speed with M Driver’s package is 174 mph, BMW says.

The 2019 M2 Competition M Driver’s package includes tuning and handling adjustments that offer a track driving experience. Enhancements include sturdier struts, stiffer rear subframe, new cooling and oil lubrication systems, and an active M rear electronic locking differential that allows for more precise cornering, according to BMW. A new M Sport brake package is available with gray-painted brake calipers. With the DCT automatic, selector switches for driving and steering modes are operated by two M buttons on the steering wheel.

Updates to the exterior styling add to the M2 Competition’s sporty flavor with a lower front lip or apron and three aggressively redesigned air vents. Most noticeable is a larger one-piece BMW kidney-shaped gloss black grille with sharper angles. The new BMW M2 Competition also gets new side mirrors, borrowed from the M4, and rides on 19-in. forged alloy wheels with Y-spoke pattern in a choice of finishes. New black dual exhausts with electric flaps and a black M2 badge are special rear treatments.

Additionally, BMW is offering new metallic Hockenheim Silver and Sunset Orange exterior paint choices. On the inside, new leather bucket seats from the M4 with blue or orange stitching are available with embedded M2 illuminated logos in the seatbacks.
