2017 Mini John Cooper Works Clubman Offers Race-Inspired Performance

By Philly Murtha, September 21, 2016
This week, Mini unveiled the 2017 John Cooper Works Clubman compact car with a “motorsports” inspired twin-turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and its newest All4 all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The new sporty variant of the stretched Clubman wagon will be revealed at the upcoming Paris Motor Show and will reach U.S. dealer showrooms in December of this year.

The power plant for this new Clubman John Cooper Works is a BMW-developed 2.0-liter turbo engine that produces 228 horsepower and the most torque—258 lb.-ft.—of any John Cooper Works model. A sporty aluminum-tipped exhaust, tuned suspension, and powerful Brembo brakes with 4-piston front calipers complete the new racy package. The new JCW Clubman can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6 seconds with either the standard 6-speed manual or 8-speed Steptronic sports automatic transmission with paddle shifters, according to Mini. The top speed for the new Mini John Cooper Works Clubman is 147 mph, the company claims.

This 5-seater that reflects Mini’s history of rally car racing can be equipped with the standard sport suspension or an optional Dynamic Damper Control. It rides closer to the ground for agility and better handling and performance, Mini says. Exclusive elements for the Clubman John Cooper Works that rides on 18-in. black JCW Grip Spoke wheels include performance sport seats in Carbon Black fabric with integrated headrests and gray checker trim plus red accents. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and stainless sport pedals also are featured. Optional black leather upholstery can be ordered.

Bluetooth connectivity is standard with a 6.5-in. display screen. Advanced driver-assistance features include park-distance control and a rearview camera. Navigation, a panoramic glass roof, and a premium Harman/Kardon audio system are among extras. Pricing will be revealed at a later date.
