2015 Volvo V60 Rekindles American Affection for Swedish Wagons

Confirming rumors that the 2015 Volvo V60 would be offered to American consumers, Volvo emphasized that while this new station wagon variant of the Volvo S60 offers increased versatility in the form of additional cargo space, it drives just like a sedan and is packaged in an elegant, sleek, and curvy design.

"The V60 builds upon our wagon heritage, and it's a beautiful evolution in design and direction for Volvo," said Volvo Cars of North America President and CEO John Maloney. "Many consumers will be glad to see the addition of this exciting sports wagon to the Volvo lineup in America. And this time, we've added sophistication with the dynamic driving performance of a sedan."

Volvo halted sales of the V70 station wagon several years ago as the automaker's customers displayed a preference for SUVs. However, with the discontinuation of the S40 sedan and V50 wagon in recent years, the upcoming cancellation of the C30 hatchback and C70 convertible models for 2014, and a rumored suspension of the XC90 SUV in advance of a complete redesign, Volvo has decided to expand its 2014 lineup with the new V60 Wagon.

Like the S60 sedan upon which it is based, the 2015 V60 is upgraded with refined front styling, new wheel designs, and an updated interior with optional sport seats and an available heated steering wheel. About the new upholstery colors, wood inlays, and silk metal cabin trim, Lena Jiseborn, design director, color and trim, Volvo Cars, said, "The overall effect is very warm and cozy, like being in a warm Swedish house on a cold night. The color themes correspond beautifully with the backlit white controls in the dash and elsewhere in the car."

For the 2015 V60, Volvo also introduces a Sensus Connected Touch infotainment system equipped with a 7-inch infrared beam-scanned display screen that can be used while wearing gloves in the winter, Volvo says. The system provides smartphone pairing and Wi-Fi connectivity to the Internet via connected devices or the vehicle's built-in 3G/4G connection. A new Adaptive Digital Display instrument cluster is also new, providing information via three themes called Elegance, Eco, and Performance.

City Safety technology is standard equipment on the 2015 V60, operating at speeds under 31 mph to help avoid low-speed collisions, and Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is optional. As an extension of this technology, Volvo introduces new Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake. The V60 is also offered with an optional blind-spot information system and a cross-traffic alert system.

Volvo has not announced full details of the 2015 V60 lineup, but it is likely to mirror the S60 model roster with V60 T5, V60 T6, and V60 R-Design models. The performance-tuned 2015 Volvo V60 R-Design made its global debut at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

To create the 2015 V60 R-Design, Volvo builds upon the V60 T6 model, which is equipped with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine generating 300 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 325 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,100 rpm and 4,200 rpm. An optional Polestar performance kit increases output to 329 horsepower, according to Volvo.

The standard automatic transmission is equipped with Advanced Quick Shift technology for 2015, and includes a Sport mode and new paddle shifters. It feeds power to all four of the V60 R-Design's wheels, and Volvo says it accelerates to 60 mph in 6 seconds flat.

Volvo installs a sport-tuned suspension in the new V60 R-Design, lowering the vehicle by 15mm. It is equipped with a front strut tower brace, stiffer springs, rear monotube shocks for faster damping performance, and stiffer rear bushings to better control body roll, according to Volvo.

"The driving experience should be so connected that it boosts the dynamics without making the chassis feel too raw. If the chassis is too firm, even smooth tarmac can feel bumpy. We aim for a sporting yet luxurious feel," said Peter Mertens, senior vice president research and development at Volvo Car Group.

To set the V60 R Design apart from other models, it receives a frameless Tech Matte Black grille with high-gloss and satin detailing, rear diffuser panel with R-Design exhaust outlets, and a choice between 18-inch and 19-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, the V60 R Design has standard front sport seats with leather bolsters and textile inserts. A black headliner and stainless steel doorsill plates are standard, with full leather available as an option.

Volvo will release more details about the new 2015 V60 as the car approaches its official on-sale date later this year.
