2015 Subaru Legacy Takes Aim at Midsize Family Sedan Competitors

Last year, Subaru sold 42,291 Legacy sedans. By comparison, Toyota sold 408,484 units of the Camry. Do the math, and it is easy to conclude that Subaru wants a bigger piece of the midsize family sedan pie. With the redesigned 2015 Subaru Legacy, the automaker clearly signals its intentions.

The 2015 Legacy is more fuel-efficient than before, thanks to a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). Subaru says the Legacy 2.5i model will get 30 mpg in combined driving, an impressive number considering its standard all-wheel-drive (AWD) system and that Subaru claims the redesigned Legacy has the largest interior in its class.

As was true of the previous model, the new 2015 Legacy 2.5i has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, which is slightly more powerful with 175 horsepower on tap. Subaru continues to offer the Legacy 3.6R for 2015, which is equipped with a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine making 256 horsepower. Both engines are paired with a CVT and AWD.

The 2015 Legacy model's AWD system is the automaker's Active Torque Split system, which primarily powers the car's front wheels. It continually monitors how the car is driven, though, distributing power accordingly in order to maximize traction and handling. Active Torque Vectoring is new for 2015, helping to improve the Legacy's cornering feel.

Subaru has taken steps to quiet the Legacy's interior, and installs what it characterizes as premium materials for the cabin. Dimensions increase in every direction, including for the trunk, which grows to 15 cu. ft. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat expands cargo carrying capacity as is necessary.

The Legacy 2.5i lineup consists of Standard, Premium, and Limited trim levels, with Premium expected to be the most popular. The Legacy 3.6R is offered only in leather-lined Limited trim.

All 2015 Subaru Legacy models get new infotainment systems with touch-capacitive display screens. Standard equipment includes Starlink smartphone connectivity, HD Radio, Aha and Pandora integration, and a USB port. Upgrade to the Premium trim level and the screen grows from 6.2 in. to 7 in. in size, and the system adds SMS text messaging capability, satellite radio, iTunes tagging capability, and dual USB ports. A navigation system with natural voice-recognition technology is optional for the Premium and Limited versions.

Subaru also upgrades the 2015 Legacy in terms of safety features. The optional EyeSight system gets improved camera technology, and the new Legacy is available with blind-spot detection, lane-change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert systems. These three new features are optional for the Premium trim level, and standard on Limited models.

Given how brutal the winter of 2014 has been, and that the redesigned 2015 Subaru Legacy continues to offer all-wheel drive as standard equipment, the new Legacy model's sleeker styling, roomier interior, improved fuel economy, and upgraded technology should make the car more compelling to consumers.
