2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Tops Range with Twin-Turbo V-12

2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Tops Range with Twin-Turbo V-12

By Jeff Youngs,
Mercedes-Benz has officially announced that the 2015 S-Class Coupe model range, which replaces the previous CL-Class model in the automaker's lineup, will be offered with a flagship S65 AMG variant equipped with a twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter V-12 engine good for 621 horsepower and 738 lb.-ft. of torque. As is expected, the new 2015 Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe also includes a full complement of high-performance hardware to back up the powerful engine.

"There are AMG fans for whom our V-12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things," said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "For this clientele, we have developed a unique car in the form of the new S65 AMG Coupe. From driving dynamics to comfort and equipment, our new 12-cylinder coupe surpasses even the highest of expectations."

The 6.0-liter, biturbo V-12 engine's horsepower is made from 4,800 rpm to 5,400 rpm, while peak torque is available from 2,300 rpm to 4,300 rpm. Hand-built in accordance with AMG's "one man, one engine" principle, the engine features a carbon fiber and aluminum engine cover, as well as an engine plate bearing the signature of the person who built it.

A 7-speed AMG SpeedShift Plus transmission powers the S65 AMG Coupe's rear wheels, and Mercedes says the car will accelerate to 60 mph in 4 seconds flat on the way to a top speed of 186 mph. The driver chooses between Controlled Efficiency, Sport, and Manual driving modes, and an Eco Stop/Start feature is active when the S65 AMG's transmission is in the Controlled Efficiency setting.

This is the first Mercedes-Benz to get the automaker's new curve tilting functionality for its suspension, which allows the S65 AMG Coupe to lean into a curve similar to how Lightning McQueen rounds corners in the Disney Pixar movie, "Cars." The resulting effect on occupants is like driving on a banked curve on a racetrack; the suspension reduces lateral acceleration on the car's occupants.

The AMG sport suspension offers Comfort and Sport modes, and also features Magic Body Control and Road Surface Scan technologies. The Road Surface Scan system is able to identify lumpy roads in advance of the car's arrival so that the suspension can automatically adjust to deliver the best mix of ride and handling.

Additional AMG-massaged hardware includes the speed-sensitive sport steering, AMG sport exhaust system with dual twin-tailpipe design rendered in chrome, and the AMG high-performance compound braking system with gray brake calipers. Red calipers are available, as are ceramic brakes, which reduce unsprung weight by 20%, according to the automaker. Another weight-saving measure is the S65 AMG Coupe's standard Lithium-ion battery, which trims weight by 44 lbs. compared with a conventional battery.

A set of 20-in. forged aluminum and hand-finished wheels comes standard, featuring a 16-spoke design that gives the illusion that the wheels are larger when the car is underway. The center wheel bolt cover resembles a center-lock motorsport design, and other wheel styles are available as options.

High-sheen chrome exterior trim is used to visually set the S65 AMG Coupe apart from other S-Class Coupes, while the interior is equipped with a new AMG 3-spoke sport steering wheel and special instrumentation. The standard equipment list includes a Burmeister 3D surround-sound audio system, touchpad control of infotainment technologies, and Active Parking Assist technology, as well as a suite of safety systems including a 360-degree surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control with Steering Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Cross-Traffic Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Pre-Safe Brake, and Pre-Safe Plus.

Available as an option, diamond-pattern Designo AMG Exclusive Nappa leather is wrapped around the S65 AMG Coupe's standard front sport seats. The package also includes a leather roofliner, leather-wrapped dashboard and door panels, and AMG stainless steel doorsill trim that illuminates when the doors are opened.

Mercedes expects to start taking orders for the new S65 AMG Coupe in August, and the car is expected to arrive in dealerships by the end of the year.
