2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe to Debut at New York Auto Show

2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe to Debut at New York Auto Show

By Jeff Youngs, March 24, 2014
At the 2014 New York Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe lineup adds a new performance-tuned variant designed to deliver greater power, performance, and prestige. To achieve those mandates, the new 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe is equipped with a more robust powertrain, several hardware enhancements, and numerous changes intended to make it the most capable S-Class Coupe available.

Starting with the changes under the car's hood, Mercedes installs a 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine into the new S63 AMG Coupe. It generates 577 horsepower and 664 lb.-ft. of torque, gains of 41 horsepower and 74 lb.-ft. over the CL63 AMG model it replaces. A 7-speed AMG SpeedShift sport transmission with Controlled Efficiency, Sport, and Manual driving modes puts the power to all four of the S63 AMG Coupe's wheels through a standard 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. In this car, the 4Matic system splits the power 33% to the front wheels and 67% to the rear wheels.

Mercedes says that an Eco start/stop system is also standard for the 2015 S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe, but you're likely more concerned with performance data than you are fuel-economy estimates. According to Mercedes, the S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe accelerates to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 186 mph. Additional hardware upgrades include an AMG sport exhaust system that is calibrated to deliver a louder note in Sport and Manual driving modes, an adaptive damping AirMatic suspension, and an AMG high-performance composite braking system. Options include AMG ceramic brakes and 20-in. forged aluminum wheels.

Built to AMG Lightweight Construction principles, the new 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe is 140 lbs. lighter than the CL63 AMG, tipping the scales at an estimated 4,400 lbs. AMG aerodynamic styling, unique AMG detailing, and a more contemporary typography for the nomenclature summarize the exterior highlights, while the car's interior features new AMG sport seats with heating, ventilation, and memory, wrapped in premium leather with contrast piping. A unique 3-spoke AMG steering wheel is covered in perforated leather and equipped with aluminum shift paddles, and the driver faces special AMG TFT high-resolution instrumentation. As is true of the S-Class Coupe upon which it is based, the S63 AMG Coupe features a new touchpad COMAND infotainment system.

When the S63 AMG Coupe goes on sale in the fall of 2014, Mercedes-Benz will offer a limited-production run of Edition 1 models dipped in Magno Alanite Grey matte paint. This version of the car will also feature Swarovski crystals in LED headlights, Bengal Red/Black exclusive leather with contrasting stitching and piping, extended premium leather for various parts of the interior, a Dinamica headliner, AMG Ceramic Braking System, and more.

Prices for the 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Edition 1 model and other variants of the car will be announced closer to its arrival in showrooms.
