2015 Mazda CX-5 Offers Fuel Efficiency, Sporty Handling
By Philly Murtha, June 09, 2015
Fuel-efficient, yet sporty and fun-to-drive, the Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV was introduced as a 2013 model. The 5-passenger CX-5 replaced the Tribute and CX-7 in Mazda's lineup and has been redesigned for 2016. In the photo gallery that follows, we highlight some of the notable features of the current 2015 CX-5.
The 2015 CX-5 is offered in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels. Standard equipment on the CX-5 Sport includes 17-in. wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, adjustable driver seat, tilt steering wheel, and a folding rear seat. The Touring and Grand Touring trim levels include Bluetooth Audio and Technology packages with multiple upgrades.
The 2015 Mazda CX-5 is available with one of two 4-cylinder engines. The base Sport model's standard 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine produces 155 horsepower and is matched with a 6-speed manual transmission for drivers who want to connect with the vehicle. A 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine that produces 184 horsepower and is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission is standard on Touring and Grand Touring versions.
The 2015 CX-5 Sport with standard 2.0-liter engine and 6-speed manual transmission averages 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA, while the peppier 2.5-liter 4-cylinder powertrain with automatic transmission averages 1 mpg less in city driving and 3 mpg fewer on the highway.
Mazda focused on safety while designing the CX-5. The front-wheel-drive compact SUV is equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), dual front seat-mounted air bags, curtain first- and second-row overhead air bags, panic alarm, air bag occupancy sensor, driveline traction control, and electronic stability control.
The 2015 Mazda CX-5, which is built on the same architecture as the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 models, includes sporty bucket seats in front and less confining bench rear seating. There's a front center armrest. Ample cargo space is available when the split rear seat is folded down.
The CX-5 is also infotainment savvy. The Sport version features a standard AM/FM radio, CD player, and an MP3 decoder with a 4-speaker audio system. In addition, audio controls are mounted on the compact SUV's tilt steering wheel. Keyless entry and ignition are standard on Touring and Grand Touring versions.
A Bluetooth Audio package is standard on the CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. It features phone and audio connectivity, touch-screen interface, HD Radio, Pandora Internet radio, automatic crash notification, text-message reading, and audio system voice controls.
Interior amenities are simple, with an instrument panel featuring white numbers and black backgrounds. Black or sand beige upholstery in cloth or leather are seating choices. Exterior paint colors include popular black, silver, and gray with several shades of red, blue, and white.
The upscale CX-5 Grand Touring offers larger 19-in. alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, power driver's seat with lumbar support, heated front seats, and a premium 9-speaker Bose audio system. It also comes with a power moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, and auto-on/off headlights.
