2015 GMC Canyon Could Topple Frontier and Tacoma in Midsize Pickup Class

2015 GMC Canyon Could Topple Frontier and Tacoma in Midsize Pickup Class

By Jeff Youngs, January 13, 2014
Clearly, General Motors believes there is opportunity in the midsize pickup truck segment. Following the introduction of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, GM is debuting the new 2015 GMC Canyon at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new Canyon is smaller than the full-size GMC Sierra 1500, but looks very similar to it.

Offered in base, SLE, and SLT trim in extended- or crew-cab styles with a short or a regular cargo bed and a choice between 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD), the new 2015 Canyon offers a number of configurations to please commercial buyers and lifestyle owners alike. Plus, every one of them includes free scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years or 24,000 miles of ownership.

At launch, the Canyon will be available with a 193-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine or a 302-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine, each paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. With the V-6 engine, the transmission is equipped with a tow/haul mode and automatic grade braking. When properly configured, the 2015 Canyon will haul a 1,450-lb. payload and tow a 6,700-lb. trailer. In 2016, a 2.8-liter, turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine becomes available.

Choose the optional Autotrac 4WD system and four different settings become available. The 2WD setting puts the power to the Canyon's rear wheels, regardless of what's happening in terms of traction. Select the Auto setting and when the rear wheels slip, the system automatically sends engine power to the front wheels for extra traction and grip. Two 4WD settings are also included: 4-Hi and 4-Lo. An automatic locking rear differential is an option, and is included in the available All-Terrain package.

Offered only for the Canyon SLE model in conjunction with 4WD, the All-Terrain package includes revised exterior and interior trim plus unique 17-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, off-road suspension tuning, the automatic locking rear differential, and a hill-descent control system to complement the standard hill-start assist system.

GMC has designed the Canyon's cargo beds for utility and ease of use. Featuring a 2-tier loading design, the beds include numerous fixed and adjustable tie-down hooks and the truck's rear bumpers include integrated steps on each corner. Options include removable cargo tie-down rings, an EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate, spray-in bed liner applied at the factory, toolbox, cargo management system, and a tonneau cover for the bed.

Every 2015 Canyon is equipped with projector beam headlights, LED running lights, and stain-resistant cloth upholstery covering dual-firmness seat foam designed to provide years of comfort. A power driver's seat is standard, and the Canyon SLT model comes with leather and heated front seats. Next-generation OnStar continues to provide free services for a limited period of time, and now offers a 4G LTE connection and a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

Options on the new Canyon include an IntelliLink infotainment system with navigation and an 8-inch touch screen with gesture-recognition capability. Natural voice recognition, Siri Eyes Free technology, and access to the new GMC AppShop are also included, along with a new Teen Driver system that allows the Canyon's owner to pre-set speed and stereo volume limits, as well as record how the truck was driven while in the hands of a younger driver. The 2015 GMC Canyon can also be optioned with forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning systems, as well as a rear-seat entertainment system.

GMC expects the 2015 Canyon to go on sale in the fall of 2014. Prices and final specifications will be available closer to the truck's arrival in showrooms.
