2015 BMW X4 Gives Sports Activity Vehicle Concept a Second Try

By Jeff Youngs,
Citing total worldwide sales of 250,000 units for its X6 Sports Activity Vehicle as one reason for building the 2015 X4 Sports Activity Vehicle, BMW is introducing its newest 5-door fastback crossover SUV at the 2014 New York Auto Show. Available as the X4 xDrive28i and the X4 xDrive35i, the new 2015 BMW X4 is based on the same platform as the BMW X3 but sits lower to the ground and is smaller in terms of interior space.

A 240-horsepower, turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard equipment for the X4 xDrive28i, delivering power to all four wheels through an 8-speed sports automatic transmission featuring paddle shifters. The X4 xDrive35i has the same drivetrain coupled to a 300-horsepower, turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine. Both versions of the 2015 BMW X4 come with automatic start/stop technology that helps to conserve fuel, and the standard Driving Dynamics Control system features an Eco Pro mode that calibrates the X4 to return maximum fuel economy.

Don't think for a moment that BMW is abandoning its Ultimate Driving Machine ethos with the new 2015 X4. Switch the Driving Dynamics Control system to Sport or Sport+ mode and more responsive powertrain settings combined with the standard sport automatic transmission, variable sport steering, and Performance Control torque-vectoring system deliver the athleticism synonymous with BMW, the automaker says. Choose the optional M Sport Line package and the crossover is equipped with sport-bolstered front seats, sport-tuned suspension, and bigger wheels and tires up to 20 in. in diameter.

Inside, the 2015 BMW X4 is designed to hold four occupants, with room between the deeply sculpted rear outboard seats for an extra passenger when necessary. Behind the rear seats, the X4 supplies 17.7 cu. ft. of cargo volume. Fold the rear seats and space expands to 49.4 cu. ft. A power tailgate is standard, and can be optioned with a Smart Opener system that powers it up when the person with the key waves a foot under the rear bumper.

An iDrive infotainment system is standard, and can be upgraded with a navigation system that includes a touchpad handwriting-recognition feature, allowing the driver to input data with a fingertip. ConnectedDrive smartphone pairing and services, BMW Apps technology, and a head-up display are available for the X4, while 10 free years of BMW eCall Assist service is standard.

The new X4 can also be optioned with a long list of safety systems including pedestrian and collision warning, lane-departure warning, active blind-spot warning, a city braking system, and what BMW calls an Active Driving Assistant. The reversing camera can be paired with a 360-degree surround-view camera, and the X4's optional active cruise control system features stop-and-go capability for heavy traffic situations.

BMW will build the X4 in its Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly plant, and the model goes on sale in the spring of 2014 with a starting price of $45,625. For more details, read our complete preview of the 2015 BMW X4.
