2014 Toyota 4Runner Updated for New Model Year

By Jeff Youngs, April 30, 2013
Toyota calls the 2014 4Runner "redesigned," and the rugged body-on-frame SUV does offer new styling details for each of its three trim levels: SR5, Trail, and Limited. All models are equipped with new front styling including a revised grille and bumper, and new smoked projector-beam headlights with LED running lights. Additional updates include a standard roof rack, redesigned LED taillights, and a radio antenna embedded into the 4Runner's rear window.

Choose the 4Runner SR5 or the 4Runner Trail, and the SUV is equipped with a color-keyed grille insert and front fog lights installed into a "cut" that extends into the bumper from the headlights. These two versions of the 2014 4Runner are also equipped with redesigned 17-inch aluminum wheels, while the chrome-dipped 4Runner Limited gets a new darkened wheel finish.

The 2014 Toyota 4Runner Trail is differentiated by its standard hood scoop and silver-painted bumper inserts, but its previously gray bumpers and over-fender trim is replaced by body-color trim for 2014. New colors for all 2014 4Runner models include Super White, Attitude Black, Barcelona Red, and Nautical Blue.

Inside, the SR5 and Trail models gain soft touch door trim for 2014, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The SR5 is now equipped with Optitron gauges, a multi-function display screen with Eco Driving feedback, and an 8-way power driver's seat. Trail models add an overhead console gathering together all of the 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system switches, as well as a compass and an outside temperature display. Limited models gain heated and ventilated front seats with standard memory settings for the driver and front passenger.

Toyota introduces new stereos for the 2014 4Runner. The SR5 and Trail models are equipped with Entune Audio Plus, which includes three free years of Entune multi-media services, 8 speakers, satellite radio with a free 3-month subscription, a USB port with an iPod connection, and Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming. The 4Runner Limited is equipped with a standard Entune Premium JBL Audio system with a 7-inch in-dash monitor, 15 premium loudspeakers, navigation system, HD Radio, iTunes tagging capability, and satellite radio. Both systems continue to offer a Party Mode speaker setting to add a soundtrack to tailgate parties.

Toyota's Entune system provides access to multi-media services when a smartphone is paired to the system. Then, via voice-activated commands or the in-dash touch screen, 4Runner occupants can use the Bing search engine, iHeartRadio and Pandora Internet radio, and feeds of news, weather, sports and stocks. Toyota continues to offer its Safety Connect services complete with an SOS button that can summon emergency rescue personnel, but Toyota continues to offer this feature only on the 2014 4Runner Limited.

Otherwise, the 2014 Toyota 4Runner is the same as last year. The SUV continues with a 4.0-liter V-6 engine delivering 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque, an automatic transmission, and rear-wheel (2WD) or 4-wheel drive (the latter offered as part-time or full-time 4WD). A tow hitch receiver and trailer wiring are standard, and the 2014 4Runner tows up to 5,000 pounds. Fuel-economy ratings are 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway for RWD models, while the 2014 4Runner with 4WD is expected to return 17 mpg city/22 mpg highway.
