2014 Subaru Forester Named Motor Trend SUV of the Year

By Jeff Youngs,
Motor Trend magazine has named the redesigned 2014 Subaru Forester as its SUV of the Year, making the third time in six years that Subaru has earned the distinction, and making Subaru the only company to win the award three times. Previously, the 2009 Forester and 2010 Outback were named SUV of the Year by Motor Trend.

The magazine's editors evaluated the new 2014 Forester in the company of 12 other new or substantially upgraded SUVs, including direct competitors like the Buick Encore, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Toyota RAV4. The SUVs were judged based on design and materials, engineering, performance of intended function, efficiency, safety, and value.

Motor Trend editor-in-chief Edward Loh said: "Our editors were particularly impressed by the powerful yet efficient turbocharged engine, the intelligent and sporty CVT transmission, and the excellent visibility and interior package found within the Forester. Practical, affordable, efficient, and fun-to-drive, (the) Forester truly ticked every box."

In addition to earning Motor Trend SUV of the Year, the 2014 Forester has earned a "Top Safety Pick +" crash-test rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a highest-possible 5-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Fuel-economy ratings range from 22 mpg in the city to 32 mpg on the highway, depending on engine and transmission selection. Additionally, the Forester is among the larger vehicles in its class, offering up to 74.7 cu. ft. of cargo space with the rear seat folded down.
