2014 Kia Sorento Receives Significant Updates

By Jeff Youngs, November 30, 2012
Sometimes there is more to a story than meets the eye, and so it is with the 2014 Kia Sorento, which debuted at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2014 Sorento looks similar to the 2013 model, but 80% of this midsize crossover SUV is either new or redesigned, according to Kia.

"With each new vehicle launch Kia is advancing the concept of value to new levels of sophistication, and with significant chassis, suspension, powertrain and comfort and convenience upgrades the new Sorento continues that trend," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing and communications, Kia Motors America. "With more than 80 percent of the 2014 Sorento including new or significantly redesigned parts, it's obvious that the improvements are not just skin deep."

For 2014, a new SX Limited (SXL) trim level joins the Sorento lineup. Continuing from last year are the Sorento LX, LX V6, EX, EX V6, and SX.

The standard engine is a direct-injected 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that was optional last year. The Sorento LX and EX include this engine, which generates 191 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 181 lb.-ft. of torque at a 4,250 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission feeds the power to the Sorento's front wheels.

A new 3.3-liter, direct-injection V-6 engine is optional for the Sorento LX and EX, and standard on the SX and SXL. It generates 290 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 252 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,200 rpm. A Torque On Demand all-wheel-drive system is optional with the V-6, and for 2014 it adds Torque Vectoring Cornering Control (TVCC) technology that aids stability and handling under certain driving conditions.

The new engine lineup is installed into a new chassis that increases torsional stiffness by 18%, improving the 2014 Sorento's ride quality and handling capabilities, according to Kia. The Sorento also includes a new strut tower brace, strengthened suspension components, and new electric steering. Optional Flex Steer technology allows the driver to calibrate steering heft and response to Comfort, Normal and Sport modes.

Restyled front and rear, Kia says the design modifications "enhance the Sorento with a lower, broader appearance up front and a visually wider stance at the rear." The new grille features silver trim or black mesh insert, depending on the model selected, and the 2014 Sorento offers LED running lights, fog lights, and LED taillights. Aluminum wheels are standard, offered in 17-, 18-, or new 19-inch designs.

Inside, the 2014 Kia Sorento receives a redesigned instrument panel. All except for the LX trim level get a new 7-inch TFT gauge cluster with a digital speedometer, trip computer data, vehicle information, and more. Analog gauges for the tachometer and fuel level continue.

Kia has also rearranged the dashboard's center stack to accommodate a larger 8-inch infotainment touch screen and to make it easier to use the controls. The Sorento can be equipped with a navigation system, Infinity premium audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and new UVO eServices telematics technology. Additional upgrades include a new programmable power tailgate, redesigned panoramic sunroof, new second-row window sunshades, new ventilated front seats, new 115-volt power inverter, new illuminated door handle pockets, and a new blind-spot detection system.

The 2014 Kia Sorento SXL trim is offered only with Ebony Black, Snow White Pearl and Titanium Silver paint. This version includes self-leveling xenon headlights, unique 19-inch chrome wheels, red-painted brake calipers, and SXL badges. Inside, the Sorento SXL gets premium Nappa leather seats, exclusive soft-touch headliner and pillar accent trim, wood-trimmed and heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats.

The 2014 Kia Sorento is expected to arrive at dealerships during the first quarter of 2013.
